Saving Archives

You can save archives using the ‘File/Save’ ‘File/Save As’ File/ Save Encrypted’ or the Save toolbar button.

There is just one issue to consider when saving files: Whether to save normally or save in encrypted format.

Encrypting Archives

You can choose to save in encrypted format in 3 ways…

  1. Use the File/Save Encrypted menu option
  2. Use the File/Save As menu option and enter a filename with a .xip extension
  3. Select ‘Always save files encrypted’ from the  Preferences Dialog

When an archive is saved as encrypted it will gain a .xip extension. If the archive originally had a .zip extension that will become .xip, if the archive had any other extension, e.g. .jar .ear etc, the newly encrypted archive will have a .jar.xip or .ear.xip extension – it is not very likely you will want to encrypt .jar .ear or .war archives as they would then become unreadable.

The encryption used is of modest strength and not suitable for securing company or national secrets. Having said that, if you forget your encryption password you have, for all practical purposes, lost your data.

When you save an archive in encrypted format you will be asked for a password. The longer the password you enter, the better. You will have to enter the password twice to confirm it. Leading or trailing spaces are not allowed in the password, all other characters are allowed.

When you open an encrypted archive, you will be prompted for the password. If you enter the wrong password you will not be able to read your data. JZip detects encrypted archives solely by the .xip extension. Note: .xip archives cannot be read by other Zip utilities.
